Ghostbeard : Live At Budokan

Budokan

Back in December of 2012 I found myself in Toyko with the Amon Tobin “ISAM Live” tour. Taking 4000 pounds worth of stage design to the other side of the world seemed like a perfectly good excuse to spend an extra 7 days tooling around Tokyo. And of course my first mission was to find the good reggae shops. You know when you’re in a record store and the reggae bin consists of like two good records and a bunch of UB40 and you wonder “where are all the good used reggae records”… well they’re all in Japan. So after spending a ludicrous amount of money on a large stack of Jamaican classics, I turned my attention to the local bins. I admit to knowing absolutely nothing about the Japanese reggae scene. Except to say I found some amazing records and that it sounds like they all grew up on On U Sound classics. I don’t know if these are the freshest tunes out of Japan or like 10 years old or whatever. This is just some awesome stuff I finally found the time to mix together (Ghostdad has slowed down the output…).

Paying It All Back : An On U Sound Tribute

Paying It All Back

Back in the mid-80’s I was in the back seat of a car. In the passenger seat was one of the local skinheads from my home town (one of the non-racist/non-asshole skins… I believe his name was Rob… Rob… if you’re reading this!) who popped in a tape of Time Boom X De Devil Dead by Dub Syndicate & Lee Perry. I was a punk & metal kid that until that point knew about dub & reggae largely through an obsession with Linton Kwesi Johnson’s live album, The Clash, Marley, and being really into PIL “Metal Box” but otherwise couldn’t say I’d looked much further.  That listen to Time Boom blew my mind and I tracked down a copy  the next week. That led me down the worm-hole of discovering every On U Sound record possible and was really the gate way to a lifetime of dub obsession. Although ostensibly a reggae/dub label, something about it all just seemed so different and so punk. Years later I found myself working their catalog through my job at Cargo Records. And forward 25 years later and the name still comes up on a regular basis (mostly in nerdy conversations with The Bug). So this mix has been brewing mentally for awhile. Hopefully there’s something here for the On U expert, and if you’ve never heard these records before… fucking go in!

If you dig this I would highly encourage you to empty your wallet in the same way I have to the mighty On U Sound :

Ghostbeard vs. The Upsetter

Lee Perry… The Upsetter… Scratch Perry… One of the most legendary producers in the history of reggae. If any one person deserves a mix of just their material it’s him. I make no claim as to this being completist, chronological, covering all eras… it’s just some of my favorite Lee Perry moments put together. All classics to me… but if I had to pick one, “Brotherly Love” could be on repeat until the day I die and I’d be okay with that.

XX Marks The Spot

Last month the beard hit the road with the Ninja Tune XX tour. Taking a break from all that label work to do some 20th anniversary celebrating. One run in the with NYPD, one relocated show in under 90 minutes, two big shows in SF & LA, lots of booze, 6800 people rocked by Ninja Tune crew… no sleep until Ninja Tune XXX.

This is the set I was more or less kicking on those nights. Leaning heavily on the Ninja Tune XX box-set and some other recent Ninja/Big Dada hotness and mixed up with some ragga business… including Beenie Man’s awesome rip on Kenny Rogers “The Gambler” which I can’t get enough of (how could you really).

Ghostbeard Is Bigger Than Amun-Re

GB2

Ancient sun gods got nothing on me… I’ve been to Egypt and my sound is still the champion sound.

New mix… starting off with some versions on the very excellent Prisonbreak Rhythm, couple jams from the new South Rakka’s joint, and leaning heavily on Poirier’s forthcoming Running High album for material because it’s just not easy to choose one tune (and hey… if I’ve got to do the paperwork for it… I’m going to cramp his style). If you were at the big big Karnival V.2 last weekend you’d have heard most of this go down…
