Joe Gibbs Disco Mix

GibbsThis is kind of a random post… but fuck it… I’m uploading files and bored.

While travelling in Tanzania last month and explaining to someone what I do, the question was asked how I got into reggae/dub, and additionally what was it that kept me drawn to it.

The answer to #1 is simple… while working at a record store in the 80’s I stumbled across Linton Kwesi Johnson’s “Live In Concert” album and was blown away enough to realize I needed to start looking past those Bob Marley albums that I was casually aware of.

#2 is much harder to answer, but recently I’ve been digging out my old Joe Gibbs Disco Mixes (and thanks to VP just got sent a bunch of CD collections also), and I think I can sum it up here… basically on this version of George Nooks ‘Tribal War” (one of my all time favorites)… if I could sell my house, buy a piece of land, and build a house on the space occupied during the  3:45 to 5:30 minute mark of this track… I think that would be the best place to live ever…

The beard just keeps on growing…

Two shows this week..

Jan 26th : URLer.tv Season 2 launch party at The SAT (1195 St. Laurent). Filling in for Masala’s DJ ECP who’s off in Haiti doing the right thing. Starts earlier (5:00 PM) and I’m doing a few sets over the night.

Jan 29th : The big night at Igloofest. Myself, King Cannibal, Rusko, and Douster. Temperature is dropping again this weekend for a proper outdoor winter party… but there’s plenty of bass to keep you warm (not to mention Caribou to keep you properly fucked up)… come try and outdrink me… I dare you… oh and come early… cause I’m on opening duties.

Cannibal & The Beard…

Oh hey folks… been a minute… but time for a bit of news.

The Clockout (possibly with different name) is set to return to Montreal early 2010. And expanding out to a couple other cities on a regular basis.

Also taking booking for US/Canada for King Cannibal. Looking for dates between Feb 1st-12th. I’m going to tag along and pick up the opening slot on a couple dates (as my schedule allows… you know… got a record label to run and shit). Hit me up at jeff@ninjatune.net if you want to bring to town.

King Cannibal brings some serious bass heat… think like somewhere between Amon Tobin & The Bug and you’re kind of there/kind of not…but it’s a start…

Sud-West : Endless Summer Edition

Su Su Su.. Sud-West

Well folks it’s almost time to take in those patio furniture sets and pack away the sun-screen… But not before one last drunken Tuesday with your favorite franco-anglo mid-week selectors… Poirier & Ghostbeard.

Poirier’s just released Run The Riddim is making international noises, and he of course is gearing up for the big big Karnival debut next month. Ghostbeard is still plugging this new web-site and latest mix “A Fistful Of Awesome” (which you can find under “Mixes”). Both of course have rhythms for days… and days.

We’ll be playing warm music, but you may need to bring some warm clothes anyway. One last terrace throw-down until the spring….and don’t let those Little Fluffy Clouds scare you from the Ultraworld that is St. Henri, and remember… with our Towers Of Dub it’s always a Perpetual Dawn.

Where : Terrace St. Ambroise (5080 St. Ambroise)
When : Tuesday, Sept 29th
Time : 8 PM – Midnight
Cost : Free

Next appearance of the Ghostbeard is at the Ninja Tune monthly Clockout

Sept 12th

Zoobizarre (6388 St. Hubert)

10 PM – 3:00

Ghostbeard, Luv, Big Tonne and who knows who else…

Note I’ll also be biking a 150km bike route that day… so old man Ghostbeard might need to do this one seated.
