Ghostbeard vs. The Upsetter

Lee Perry… The Upsetter… Scratch Perry… One of the most legendary producers in the history of reggae. If any one person deserves a mix of just their material it’s him. I make no claim as to this being completist, chronological, covering all eras… it’s just some of my favorite Lee Perry moments put together. All classics to me… but if I had to pick one, “Brotherly Love” could be on repeat until the day I die and I’d be okay with that.

XX Marks The Spot

Last month the beard hit the road with the Ninja Tune XX tour. Taking a break from all that label work to do some 20th anniversary celebrating. One run in the with NYPD, one relocated show in under 90 minutes, two big shows in SF & LA, lots of booze, 6800 people rocked by Ninja Tune crew… no sleep until Ninja Tune XXX.

This is the set I was more or less kicking on those nights. Leaning heavily on the Ninja Tune XX box-set and some other recent Ninja/Big Dada hotness and mixed up with some ragga business… including Beenie Man’s awesome rip on Kenny Rogers “The Gambler” which I can’t get enough of (how could you really).

Natalie Storm representing for Ghostbeard

Summertime… and the living is easy…

Here’s your tune of the summer… woman of the moment Natalie Storm comes in dub-plate style on Poirier’s “90’s Backyard (Wildlife mix) for the big man Ghostbeard. Original taken from new Poirier album “Running High”… cop it if you haven’t done so already.

And make sure to check Natalie’s latest jam with Sticky “Look Pon Me” (in fact you can hear it in my last mix… scroll down kids… scroll down)

Ghostbeard Is Bigger Than Amun-Re

GB2

Ancient sun gods got nothing on me… I’ve been to Egypt and my sound is still the champion sound.

New mix… starting off with some versions on the very excellent Prisonbreak Rhythm, couple jams from the new South Rakka’s joint, and leaning heavily on Poirier’s forthcoming Running High album for material because it’s just not easy to choose one tune (and hey… if I’ve got to do the paperwork for it… I’m going to cramp his style). If you were at the big big Karnival V.2 last weekend you’d have heard most of this go down…

Ghostbeard Wins The Stanley Cup

Yeah, well earlier this year, somewhere in my mind I thought if I did a title tribute to Scientist it would spur the Habs to bring home the cup… fuck that went well… right around the time I finished this Robert Lang was out for the season, Kovalev forgot how to play hockey… and all that remained was actually just a really fucking good mix… You can’t step to that version of 50 Ways To Leave Your Lover by Shinehead.

Girls Them Pet Ghostbeard

From around August 08. Just in time for last years Piknic gig with Sase One & Bliss. A whole lot of Burro Banton… but that’s never a bad thing. And a rediscovery of “No Tribal War”… which was a mainstay back in the Dub Lounge residency days.

Dublab Session

Holy crap… a mix from 9 years ago. This was while on a mini-tour with Amon Tobin in 2000. We stopped by Dublab in L.A to lay down some sets. I was still DJ’ing as The Notorious WIG in those days… pre hair migration to the chin. Hilariously I’m introduced on this by Daedelus who I didn’t know at the time but ended up working with closely years later when we signed him at Ninja Tune.

Anyway, this is kind of interesting just to hear what I was into in 2000. Still sounds pretty tight. Amazing what happens when you DJ sober in the afternoon.
