May 29th : Sud-West 2012 Returns

And… we’re back!

Sud-West 2012

There’s a rumble soon to return from the South-West part of the island. Sure that noise is partially the crumbling infrastructure of the Turcot Exchange, but it’s also going to be coming from the very corruption free and non-taxable sound system called Sud-West.

Man called Poirier and the another man called Ghostbeard are returning canal side for the third year. After a brief international stint (and when we say international… we mean east of Atwater) at Igloofest this past winter it’s time for another summer of Sud-West Tuesday’s to ramp up at the St. Ambroise terrace.

Beer, BBQ, Beats… and a joyful noise.

What the hell else are you doing on a Tuesday! Seriously.

Also watch for announcements of some additional Sud-West’s events around the city this summer.

Where : St. Ambroise Terrace (5080 St. Ambroise / next to canal)

When : Last Tuesday of every month from May – August

Time : 8:00 PM – Midnight

Cost : FREE!

Paying It All Back : An On U Sound Tribute

Paying It All Back

Back in the mid-80’s I was in the back seat of a car. In the passenger seat was one of the local skinheads from my home town (one of the non-racist/non-asshole skins… I believe his name was Rob… Rob… if you’re reading this!) who popped in a tape of Time Boom X De Devil Dead by Dub Syndicate & Lee Perry. I was a punk & metal kid that until that point knew about dub & reggae largely through an obsession with Linton Kwesi Johnson’s live album, The Clash, Marley, and being really into PIL “Metal Box” but otherwise couldn’t say I’d looked much further.  That listen to Time Boom blew my mind and I tracked down a copy  the next week. That led me down the worm-hole of discovering every On U Sound record possible and was really the gate way to a lifetime of dub obsession. Although ostensibly a reggae/dub label, something about it all just seemed so different and so punk. Years later I found myself working their catalog through my job at Cargo Records. And forward 25 years later and the name still comes up on a regular basis (mostly in nerdy conversations with The Bug). So this mix has been brewing mentally for awhile. Hopefully there’s something here for the On U expert, and if you’ve never heard these records before… fucking go in!

If you dig this I would highly encourage you to empty your wallet in the same way I have to the mighty On U Sound :

Jan 27th : Sud-West Igloofest Winter Edition

Oh hey… been a bit. DJ’ing has taken a bit of a back seat to diaper changing. Although my kid has figured out that volume dial and true to form always wants to turn it up. But it’s time to leave the house again!

Myself & Poirier are taking our outdoor summer monthly Sud-West for a winter spin. We’ll be taking over the Virgin Mobile tent at the legendary Igloofest for 2.5 hours of tropical heaters.

All goes down Jan 27th from 7:30 PM – midnight. See flyer for details.

Ghostbeard vs. The Upsetter

Lee Perry… The Upsetter… Scratch Perry… One of the most legendary producers in the history of reggae. If any one person deserves a mix of just their material it’s him. I make no claim as to this being completist, chronological, covering all eras… it’s just some of my favorite Lee Perry moments put together. All classics to me… but if I had to pick one, “Brotherly Love” could be on repeat until the day I die and I’d be okay with that.

July 26th : Sud-West 3

That time again! Damn the summer passes fast. Only one more chance to Sud-West after this July edition. Don’t miss. Weather looks good so far. I’ll take my chances on a 40% chance of rain considering our last edition went down under a threat of 95% death by lightning that never materialized. St. Ambroise Terrace is magic! See you there.

Ghostbeard Presents : Sud-West V.1

7 days from the official summer kick off that is Sud-West. As a warm up, or a consolation prize for those not in Montreal I put together this mix of jams. And in the process rediscovered just how good New Age Steppers are… right then… see you on the St. Ambroise Terrace.

Sud-West 2011

Good god… it’s been awhile. Just dusting off my diaper changing skills and Mega-Blocks steeze and getting back on the decks. New mixes forthcoming… but most importantly… it’s the return of Sud West :

Time for your favorite Franco-Anglo duo, Poirier & Ghostbeard, to drop onto the St Ambroise terrace for another summer of Tuesdays.

It’s the sort of St. Henri revitalization plan that doesn’t need years of debate and tons of government spending. In fact Sud-West is so for the people it’s positively free. Beats for the people! And don’t forgot the other two important B’s… BBQ & Beer.

Poirier should need no introduction… Ninja Tune’s globe-trotting ambassador of all things bass.

I  prefer to live behind the scenes running Ninja Tune… but every so often, like the Yeti, rare glimpses of me can be caught as I manage to balance a drink and a mix at the same time.

Bring on sloppy Tuesdays. Embrace hungover Wednesdays.

Boom!

Sud-West Episode 1 (May 31st) : in which one can stretch their livers in anticipation of Amon Tobin’s big kick off Mutek show the next night.

Episodes 2-4 : last Tuesday of every month through August.

When : May 31st
Where : St. Ambroise Terrace – 5080 St. Ambroise (next to canal)
Time : 8:00 PM – midnight
Cost : FREE

Feb 26th : Karnival!!!

In a continuing mission to bring the tropical heat to a Montreal winter, I’ll be dropping in for a guest slot at (my Sud-West co-host’s) Poirier’s wildly popular Karnival. Nuit Blanche edition which means it’s free free free… and at Club Soda for expanded capacity for this edition. We rocked this shit last year and it was packed all night long. I suggest getting there early to avoid the long lines.

My first DJ gig of my 40’s… see you on the dancefloor… ya god-damn kids!

Excuse the lack of mixes recently. I’ve been busy being Papa Ghostbeard. Getting back on it soon…
